Taiwan Eyes Stronger Ties with U.S., Israel

(MENAFN) Taiwan’s Vice President William Lai Ching-te welcomed a delegation from the US-based pro-Israel lobbying group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), in Taipei late Monday, marking the first visit of its kind to the island.

“This is the first AIPAC delegation to Taiwan,” Lai said, highlighting Taiwan’s growing engagement with Israel despite domestic protests over the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

“As we deepen strategic partnerships, invest in advanced tech and enhance our defense capabilities, we look forward to closer Taiwan-US-Israel cooperation on security, trade and beyond, promoting peace across the Taiwan Strait,” Lai added in a statement shared on the US social media platform X.

In a separate official statement on Tuesday, Taipei confirmed that Lai also emphasized Taiwan’s semiconductor sector. He expressed hope the island could "make the most of its advantages as a semiconductor industry hub by integrating US and Israeli resources in research and development."

Taiwan does not formally recognize Israel or Palestine, but it has maintained commercial ties with Tel Aviv since 1993 through an economic and trade office in the capital. Collaboration primarily focuses on technology, industry, and defense.
