Iran-US Geneva Talks to Zero in on Nuclear Issue

(MENAFN) Iran confirmed Tuesday that indirect negotiations with the United States in Geneva will center squarely on its nuclear program, as diplomats from both nations converged on the Swiss city for a fresh round of high-stakes talks.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, speaking to state television, said the Iranian delegation departed for the negotiation venue ahead of discussions set to begin at 12:30 local time (0900 GMT).

Baghaei revealed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Monday with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi to address technical matters tied to the nuclear dossier — a meeting mirrored Tuesday by a separate session between the US delegation and the UN's top nuclear official, running parallel to the broader Iran-US indirect engagement.

According to Baghaei, all outstanding issues will be relayed between the parties through Omani intermediaries, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi steering the mediation effort.

The two nations had revived their indirect nuclear diplomacy in Muscat earlier this month under Oman's facilitation — nearly eight months after negotiations collapsed in the wake of an Israeli assault on Iran that triggered a 12-day armed conflict.

Despite a charged backdrop fueled by an escalating US military presence in the Persian Gulf, both sides registered cautiously optimistic assessments following the most recent round of dialogue.

Iran's delegation in Tuesday's session is headed by Araghchi, while the American side is represented by envoy Steve Witkoff and informal adviser Jared Kushner.
