Iran-U.S. Nuclear Talks Kick Off in Geneva
The Omani Foreign Ministry announced the development on X, the U.S.-based social media platform, noting that the talks opened in parallel with a high-level meeting between Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi and Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
During that meeting, Al-Busaidi underscored the "professional and technical" role of the IAEA and stressed "the need to ensure transparency, credibility, and proper governance of the relevant procedures," the ministry said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is helming Tehran's delegation, flanked by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi and a contingent of nuclear and legal specialists.
Washington's delegation mirrors the lineup from prior rounds — led by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff alongside President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
This marks the third round of indirect talks brokered by Oman since nuclear diplomacy was revived last month, following broader regional efforts — including by Türkiye — to de-escalate tensions between the two adversaries. The previous sessions, held first in Muscat and then in Geneva, yielded cautiously optimistic signals from both sides, with Iranian negotiators revealing that negotiators had aligned on "guiding principles" they believe could lay the groundwork for a broader agreement.
The renewed diplomacy unfolds against a charged backdrop — a substantial U.S. military buildup in the Persian Gulf region runs concurrent with a series of recent exercises carried out by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), underscoring the fragile and high-stakes nature of the ongoing negotiations.
