Rubio Says Iran’s Ballistic Missile Silence Is ‘Big Problem’
Speaking to reporters on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts during a meeting of the leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Rubio emphasized: “It's also important to remember that Iran refuses, refuses to talk about the ballistic missiles to us or to anyone, and that's a big problem.”
He described Iran as a long-standing threat to the United States, noting that while the country’s nuclear program has been curtailed, Tehran continues efforts to rebuild aspects of it. “They're not enriching right now, but they're trying to get to the point where they ultimately can,” Rubio said.
The secretary of state outlined Iran’s broader military capabilities, highlighting a substantial arsenal of ballistic missiles, especially short-range systems, which he said endanger US bases and partners across the region, including locations in the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain.
Beyond nuclear concerns, Rubio also pointed to Iran’s conventional forces, including naval assets that threaten shipping lanes and could pose risks to American personnel, illustrating a wider military posture targeting US interests.
While upcoming diplomatic discussions are expected to concentrate on Iran’s nuclear program, Rubio warned that the country’s missile developments remain a significant unresolved challenge.
